When LGBT persons finally obtained the right in 1978 to be practicing attorneys in Florida, nothing prevented law firms and even the courts from routinely discriminating against these attorneys or disparaging them in practice. A determined group of attorneys set out to change this in the early 1990s, setting up a fight within The Florida Bar that went all the way to the Florida Supreme Court.
